Between 2013 and 2016 I studied classical portraiture at the studio of Charles H Cecil, in Florence Italy. This unique atelier trains students in the "sight-size" method, which Titian, Velazquez, Van Dyck, Lawrence and Sargent adopted and evolved, to produce the works of the monumental power and scale which defined western portraiture from the 1500's to the turn of the last century. Central to the approach was simplicity of composition, and the emphasis on observation from life - using form and proportion to create impact.
